Death Note
I had actually started watching Death Note during my last few weeks at school before finals and finished the entire series right before final exam week began, but I hadn't posted anything about it because I had only just started this blog of mine during summer break. Let me give you a little background information first though: I had only just started watching anime during my freshman year in high school and the one that I watched first was Naruto. The problem though is that the Naruto anime is unbelievably long and I've only gotten to a hundred or something, and truth be told, there have been too many filler episodes. As a result, I went around asking people what are some good anime I should watch and many of them replied with Attack on Titans and One Piece, but the problem was that these anime were also pretty long. Instead, I went online and searched for anime that were good and I found a couple, one of them being Death Note. I had heard that a good anime was an anime that would change how you see the world or change the way you think and I think Death Note really gave me something to mull over as its concepts are so unlike what we as a society are used to seeing.
Death Note began as a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The main protagonist of this anime is Light Yagami. He is in high school and is a genius who finds life boring, that is until the Shinigami Ryuk drops a Death Note and he picks it up. The notebook allows the one who is in possession of the notebook to kill anyone as long as they know the name of their victim and what their face looks like. Light then became a mass-murderer known as Kira with the reason that he was cleansing the world of evil and then he will rule the new world as a god. His father, Soichiro Yagami, is the chief policeman and also a part of the group led by L, the world's best investigator, who tries to find out the true form of Kira and catch him.
Death Note is a brilliantly good psychological anime as you feel as if you should hate and disagree with Light, the protagonist, but you just can't seem to. He is extremely intelligent and manages to avoid capture every time until the very end. Light believed that by killing all criminals he can make everyone think twice before committing crimes and therefore eliminating evil from the world. You will both love and hate the ending, which I won't say as it's the biggest spoiler ever. This anime keeps you wondering what will happen next so you continue watching episode after episode. If you enjoy suspense, surprise, and strategic planning then this is the anime for you.
On a slightly hilarious note, in May 2010, a middle school student in Avonworth School District was suspended for having a "Death Note", within that notebook various student names were written in it along with the name of a pop singer, Justin Bieber.
Anyway~ I really recommend everyone to watch this amazing anime and if you end up enjoying it then another anime that I would also recommend is Code Geass. Please share your thoughts on this anime and on this first post that I've written about anime below in the comments section!
